Red Dwarf’s Triple Fried Egg Chili Chutney Sandwich Recipe

We’ve all had our own “Gazpacho Soup” day. A moment when we bungled something horrendously and it all went tits up. A day we stuck our foot so far in our mouths “Made in China” is now permanently stamped on our colon. A day we showed the world just how much of a smegging smeg head we can really be.  And it haunts us.

It’s a memory that we mull over and over when we can’t sleep. It’s a time we daydream about changing – where we go back and set things right. We all have them. Hopefully, for all our Gazpacho Soup moments we have a Lister among our friends to set us straight. Someone to remind us to let it go and tie on off from time to time. To just enjoy life, even when it seems bleak and hopeless. In Season 2’s episode Thanks For All the Memories, during one of these moments Lister shares with Rimmer his recipe for the ultimate drunken snack – The triple fried egg sandwich with chili sauce and chutney.  In honor of Gazpacho Soup day we decided to recreate this sandwich. So drown your sorrows you useless goits and prepare your intestines for one hell of a work out.

  • 3 slices of white bread
  • 3 eggs
  • Butter
  • Chili sauce (we went with Sriracha)
  • Spicy Mango Chutney

Don’t worry this is easier than repairing a faulty drive plate in White Corridor 159.

  1. Melt the butter in a pan on medium to high heat, crack an egg into the pan, let it cook for about a minute.
  2. Gently flip the egg over and cook for another minute or until the whites are fully cooked but the yolk is still runny. Repeat until you have all three eggs.
  3. Spread a generous helping of chutney on the bottom slice of bread. Place an egg on the slice and cover it with chili sauce, place another egg on top of that.
  4. Spread chutney on another slice of bread and put it on top of the two eggs.
  5. Put the remaining egg on top of that and add more chili sauce.
  6. Place the last slice of bread on top and voila. Serve with Lager and a side of Gazpacho soup. If done right it eating it should feel like your having a baby.

The Verdict:

Smegging hell that is delicious. As Rimmer says “All the ingredients are wrong… but put them together and they work.” While I was extremely skeptical about this one, it was brilliant.  This recipe has been permanently added to my drunken snack list. One the first attempt I toasted the bread, as I like my fried egg sandwiches crispy. Not only is this inaccurate to the show it is also a massive mistake. There is just too much delicious slop to hold in a toasted sandwich. The toast is not absorbent enough to contain all the spicy oozing goodness. However, even untoasted this isn’t going to be a clean sandwich to eat.  Just remember to eat it before the bread dissolves.
