Hands on with the Disney+ Dutch beta
Putting the “World” into World Geekly News we had the luck in our international office of having access to Disney+ two whole months before the official launch of the service in the United States, Canada and the Netherlands! What are our first hands on experiences with the new streaming service?
First of all, how is this possible? Remember those reports from earlier this year that the Netherlands would be host to a Disney+ test run? Well, that apparently held some truth after all. The Dutch, thanks to their excellent internet infrastructure, are ideal guinea pigs for the new service and may try out Disney+ for two whole months for free! (Well, it will actually cost you €0.01.) It’s not the D23 American offer of signing up for three years and get one (the third year) free, but it is nice. So how is the experience?
Interface
When you log in you will be greeted by the Home screen (or first with a profile select screen, if you have multiple profiles). Up top you have a big banner that rotates multiple titles of interest. Beneath it you have a row of buttons for the categories “Disney”, “Pixar”, “Marvel”, “Star Wars” and “National Geographic”. Under these main rows you get a host of recommendation rows, like “Hit movies”, “Recommended for you”, “Continue watching”, “Reimagined Classics” and “4K Ultra HD and HDR”, which will lead you straight to a movie.
When you tap on one of the category buttons, “Marvel” for example, you get a similar page to the Home page. At the time of writing we have multiple rows, “Marvel Cinematic Universe” which presents you the MCU movies, “Marvel series and specials” showing you series like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, “Marvel through the years” offers you classics like the X-Men and Spider-Man cartoons from 1994, “Marvel shorts” which gives you the Ant-Man Shorts for example, and “How it all started” which basically gives you a number of first instalments of MCU movie series. For the other categories you get a similar page. “Disney” has “Live action” and “Animation” rows. “Pixar” has “Pixar films” and “Pixar Shorts” rows. “Star Wars” has a “Star wars series” row and a “The journey to Episode IX” row, which gives you all the movies in chronological order. And “National Geographic” has “National Geographic series” and “National Geographic movies”, for example. It is all pretty much straight forward and, most importantly, easy to understand.
When making a profile you can also make one tailored for kids. This currently gives you almost the same Home screen, but with an emphasis on series and movies especially watchable for kids. Instead of the franchise category banners you get more genuinely category based banners, like “Mickey Mouse & Friends” leading you to Mickey starring movies and Disney Afternoon cartoons, and “Princesses” leading you to every movie and TV series starring a Disney princess.
At the top of the screen you might have noticed a number of options. “Home” of course brings you back to the Home screen, “Search” gives you a search bar and a number of “collections” of material, like “Disney Through the Decades Collections”, “Disney Channel Collection”, “Disney Nature Collection” and “The Muppets Collection”. Under “Watchlist” you can make your own selection of movies and TV series you want to see next. “Movies” and “Series” both give you access to everything available on Disney+ when you select “All movies/series from A-Z” or a selection when selected “Featured” or genre options like “Comedy”. When you tap on a thumbnail of a TV series or movie you get a screen telling you more about the title in question, like date of release, age guidance, genre, etc. There are also tabs to related content, extras and details. A big play or resume button will set you on your way.
The interface is similar on different devices, like gaming consoles and Apple TV, to your PC experience. The mobile interface looks a bit different, though, but it is similar enough.
Issues
As Disney+ is a new streaming service and we are using the Beta there are of course a number of issues. Videos often play without issue, especially on PC, but while you can easily select the audio stream and the subtitles, there is a nuisance we hope won’t be there when the service launches officially. After picking a subtitle you are met with letters on a black bar in the mobile app or transparent grey boxes when casting to your TV or when playing from a hooked up device like a PlayStation 4. Only on PC you have just the letters on screen, after some tweaking. There were a host of subtitle options for PC users, like font selection, but those options were not available anymore at the moment of writing. We can only assume these options will return and will also be implemented on other devices.
Continuing about subtitles, not everything has them (yet). There will of course be a closed captioning option in English, but you can forget watching Darkwing Duck in English with Dutch (or any other language) subtitles, for now.
Now that we are on the subject of Darkwing Duck, there is quite an issue with this kind of cartoon. They are not in the correct episode order. DuckTales (2017) is quite serialized, but the very first episode which sets up the series, “Woo-oo!”, is listed as the fourth episode. The same issue is present with Disney Afternoon series like Darkwing Duck and the original DuckTales, but also with the 1994 Spider-Man cartoon. Series like Star Wars: Rebels and Gravity Falls do not seem to suffer this issue, so we assume Disney is going to fix this.
Continuing the episode order issue. A series like Star Wars: The Clone Wars is in the original airing episode order, but as there is an official chronological episode order it would have been nice to watch it in that order without having to look up a website and then search the next chronological episode every time. Especially as there is no “check off” yet, which indicates to you what you have already seen, causing that you might miss episodes. The same goes for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There is no option to watch those movies in chronological order or even in the Phases they were released in.
Another thing is the aspect ratio in some cases. We noticed that when using the mobile app and watching a 4:3 series, like DuckTales, the top and bottom are slightly cropped. There is no real reason for this, and it might even be device-specific, but we rather see it not happening at all.
Continuing on aspect ratio, Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers has been remastered in HD, which is of course very nice. However, this originally 4:3 series suffers from far worse cropping than mentioned earlier, losing the top and bottom of the image to fit 16:9 widescreen. While the increased image quality is welcome, the cropping we could do without. A 4:3 remastered version is available on iTunes, so it does exist.
Talking about other devices than PC or mobile. We experienced crashes when selecting a franchise category like “Star Wars” on the Home screen when using Disney+ on the PlayStation 4, which also suffers from audio mixing issues for some, with low dialogue volume and a sudden surge in volume when effects like explosions come around. We can only assume this issue will be addressed before the official launch on November 12.
Other reports that we have seen on forums are about the HDR availability. Currently it seems that Dolby Vision or HDR10 is not always automatically implemented on suitable devices. Again, an issue we are sure Disney is currently hard at work with fixing. And this is supported by the fact that at least the Android app has already been updated from version 1.0.0 at launch to 1.0.1. a couple of days later and the PlayStation 4 app is already at version 1.0.2, at the moment of writing.
Content
The big question! What is actually on Disney+? Well, the “All movies/series from A-Z” is a great way of finding out. We have counted 548 titles under “Movies” and 90 titles under “TV series”, at the moment of writing. Of course, these will be expanded upon when Disney+ launches, even on November 12 itself with the first Disney+ Originals, but this will probably be the starting lineup (in the Netherlands). We will give you a list by category of what is currently, as of writing, on Disney+ below. And it surely is a lot already. However, you will notice that this definitely is not everything Disney, Marvel, Lucasfilm and National Geographic have to offer. Disney Classics like Treasure Planet, Tarzan and The Rescuers are missing. In the TV series department, Disney Afternoon series like Tale Spin are not yet here, and a series like DuckTales (2017) only has the first season. Pixar does not yet have Ratatouille and misses shorts like Knick Knack. Marvel misses The Incredible Hulk and Spider-Man: Homecoming, but they might be tied up at Universal and Sony, respectfully. An MCU series like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. only has the first five seasons, but we might have a hint that Hulu series can show up on Disney+, because Runaways (Season 1) is here! Cloak & Dagger is probably still tied up at Amazon Prime Video. On the Marvel Animation side series like X-Men Evolution are missing as well as the feature-length Marvel movies such as Planet Hulk, which might be tied up at original distributor Lionsgate. Old Marvel live-action series, like The Incredible Hulk, are completely missing at the moment. Lucasfilm only has the main Star Wars material in its library on Disney+ right now. The 2D Clone Wars series is not here, as is the first LEGO Star Wars: The Yoda Chronicles series. Old cartoons like Droids and Ewoks and the Ewok TV movies are not yet here. Indiana Jones is completely missing in action! National Geographic also only has a smidge of its library on Disney+ right now.
From the Fox side of things, there is one 20th Century Fox movie on Disney+: Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. And it has the 20th Century Fox fanfare at the beginning cut off if you were wondering. Meanwhile, a movie like Iron Man still has its original Paramount opening. We expect more 20th Century Fox material soon, as Disney+ has been shown in presentations with Fox series like The Simpsons on the Home screen. Disney also announced Disney+ Originals based on Fox properties, like Home Alone and Night at the Museum.

Ah right, I was thinking more of the WHiH Newsfront stuff.
Great article! Super detailed. It’s hars to find such detail in articles about streaming services, specially catalogues, which is one of the most important things. Thanks for sharing 🙂
