TV news roundup for Week 39 of 2018
Welcome to the weekly TV news round-up where we go into the latest TV news regarding renewals, cancellations, and pick-ups. This week we have Doctor Who’s airtime, the first Daredevil teaser, and a host of new series ordered by Netflix.
We already knew that Doctor Who Series 11 would premiere on Sunday October 7, but it is now revealed at what time it will air. In the UK you will have to switch on BBC One at 18:45. In the US you can get your first chance to see the “The Woman Who Fell to Earth” at 13:45 (EST), with another chance on primetime at 20:00, on BBC America.
The adventure begins Sunday 7th October.

We have got a trailer for the first episode of Star Trek: Discovery spinoff Star Trek: Short Treks. The trailer for the Ensign Sylvia Tilly centric “Runaway” keeps in line with the series’ title and is also short. You can watch it in the US on October 4 on CBS All Access. We however still have not figured out if it also is coming to Netflix internationally, although we assume it will.
Netflix released another teaser trailer for the sixth and final season of House of Cards. The Robin Wright led final season will be released Friday, November 2.
Netflix also released a new teaser for Marvel’s Daredevil Season 3 in which we see Matt Murdock/Daredevil don the black suit of Season 1 again. But more importantly, Wilson Fisk/Kingpin finally is wearing a white suit! Season 3 will be with us Friday, October 19.
Netflix has ordered a host of series this week. They are…
– Virgin River, based upona Harlequin novel series in which a nurse practitioner moves to the titular town to forget her past. A baby left on her porch and a former marine change all her plans.
– Sweet Magnolias, also based upon a Harlequin novel series. This one is about three lifelong friends who navigate through the complexities of romance, career and family.
– The I-land, a mystery series about a group of ten people who wake up on an island. With no memory of how they got there of even who they are they start the trek to get home. However, the island throws extreme psychological and physical challenges their way. Neil LaBute (Syfy’s Van Helsing) will be showrunner.
– The October Faction is based upon the IDW comic series and follows the family of Fred and Doris Allen. A family of monster hunters to be precise. When Fred’s father dies his family has to follow in the grandfather’s hunter footsteps. Season 1 will have 10 episodes.
– Warrior Nun. Based upon the American comic in manga style Warrior Nun Areala created by Ben Dunn. Sister Shannon Masters is a warrior nun of the Order of the Cruciform Sword and the avatar of the Valkyrie Auria, who has turned to Christianity. Forces from both Heaven and Hell want to control her. The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Hulu (and thus also ITV Encore in the UK) has renewed their drama series Harlots for a third season. The 18th century set series follows the Wells family who run a brothel in Georgian London. The series is based upon the 2005 book The Covent Garden Ladies by British historian Hallie Rubenhold.
According to TVLine Fox has ordered a 13 episode first season of animated comedy Bless the Harts. The series stars the voice talents of Kristen Wiig (Despicable Me 2) and Maya Rudolph (Big Hero 6) and comes from The Last Man on Earth writer Emily Spivey. The series will be about the Hart family who are broke as can be but still struggle to fulfill the American dream of wealth and status. What they apparently do not know is that they are already rich in the non-material way. It is expected the series will premiere in the 2019-2020 US broadcasting season.
CBS All Access has picked up dark comedic drama Why Women Kill from Marc Cherry (Desperate Housewives). The series will follow three women in three different decades. The first one is a 60s housewife, the second a socialite in the 80s, and the third a lawyer in the present. Each will be dealing with infidelity in their marriages.
Upcoming US streaming service Disney Play has ordered a TV adaption of High Fidelity starring Zoë Kravitz (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald). She will play a record store owner (those are still around?) and ultimate music nerd obsessed with pop culture and top five lists. The first season of ten episodes will be written by Veronica West and Sarah Kuscerka (Bull) and expected somewhere in 2019. TVLine tells us that Domhall Gleeson (Ex Machina) will star in HBO ordered pilot Run. The comedic thriller centers on two ex-lovers who stuck a deal 15 years ago that if they wanted to escape life they could send the text message “run.” The series comes from Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Vicky Jones (Fleabag, Killing Eve).
Amazon Prime Video has released a first poster for comic adaption The Boys starring Karl Urban (Star Trek, Dredd) among others. The series is about a covert CIA team dealing with superheroes that go too far and have to be put in check. The poster is a recreation of the first issue of the comic.

Lucasfilm and Disney Channel have released an “extended sneak peek” for the upcoming animated series Star Wars: Resistance. The footage shows us more connections to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, like Starkiller Base.
