TV News Roundup for Week 14 of 2019
Welcome to the weekly TV news round-up, where we go into the latest TV news regarding renewals, cancellations, and pick-ups. This week we have renewals, pick-ups and a host of trailers.
Renewed
Netflix have renewed their comic book adaption The Umbrella Academy for a second season. Material is still there for more, as the comic written by Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance) and with art by Gabriel Bá (B.P.R.D.: 1947) has recently restarted at Black Horse Comics.
Netflix has also renewed the Ricky Gervais (Muppets Most Wanted) comedy After Life for a second season. The series follows Gervais as a recent widower who contemplated suicide but opted to stick around to punish the world by saying whatever he pleases.
Furthermore, Netflix Original Series and co-production with Flemish public broadcaster VRT Undercover has been renewed for a second season. At least, that is what we could translate from this Instagram post…
Cancelled
Netflix has cancelled the shortly before Halloween released cake baking instruction series The Curious Creations Of Christine McConnell. The Jim Henson Company production under their mature banner Henson Alternative had one season of six episodes starring artist, photographer and author of the cookbook Deceptive Desserts: A Lady’s Guide to Baking Bad! Christine McConnell. She was joined by a number of Jim Henson’s Creature Shop creations.
Picked up
American premium cable channel Showtime has picked up Intelligence, a spy thriller series based on real espionage events that intersect with media, politics, finance and the internet. The first season will be inspired by the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The series is coming from Academy Award winner Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty).
Netflix has picked up a first season of 10 episodes of animated comedy series Q-Force. The series will be about a James Bond-like LGBTQ spy and his team fellow LGBTQ spies. The series comes from producer Mike Schur (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Good Place) and Sean Hayes (Will & Grace) who is expected to also voice the main character. Gabe Liedman (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) will be the showrunner.
Other developments
Remember when we talked about comedy series Younger, about a 40-year-old passing for a 26-year-old to get work at a job at a New York City publishing house, moving from American cable channel TV Land to the Paramount Network? Well, you can forget about that, as Younger will remain at TV Land for its sixth season.
If you are American and do not have a subscription to streaming service CBS All Access you are in luck, because the first episode of the third The Twilight Zone revival has been uploaded to YouTube by CBS.
John Cho (Star Trek Beyond) has landed the role of Spike Spiegel in Netflix’s live-action adaption of sci-fi anime series Cowboy Bebop. The first season of a group of interplanetary bounty hunters will have ten episodes, with no release date announced yet.
Still no release date for Vertigo comic adaption Lucifer’s fourth season, which moved from American broadcaster Fox to streaming service Netflix. And also still no word on how those bonus episodes from Season 3 that were already produced for Season 4 will fit in. But we did get a new video in which cast members seem very happy about losing the restrictions that come with American broadcast TV.

Trailers
Ahead of the final season of Game of Thrones premiering on Sunday HBO has released a bunch of promos.
A trailer has been released for Nicolas Winding Refn’s (Drive) To Old Too Die Young. The 10-episode first season will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, June 14.
Netflix has released a teaser trailer for The Society, which will be released on Friday, May 10.
Netflix also released a trailer for their Christina Applegate (Up All Night) starring dark comedy Dead to Me, which will be on the service Friday, May 3.
The BBC has released a first short trailer for their comedic supernatural series Ghosts, from the people behind Horrible Histories, Bill, and Yonderland.
With AMC’s The Walking Dead finishing its ninth season last Sunday, its spin-off Fear the Walking Dead’s Season 5 is right around the corner. A first trailer for it has been released. The new season will premiere on Sunday, June 2.
AMC also released a trailer for their adaption of Joe Hill’s horror novel NOS4A2, starring Zachary Quinto (Star Trek Beyond). The series will premiere on Sunday, June 2.
DC comics adaption Gotham might be ending soon on Fox, but over on American premium channel Epix they are ramping up for the premiere of new Batman prequel series Pennyworth. A first teaser has now been released.
