Week 21 of 2019

Welcome to the weekly TV news round-up, where we go into the latest TV news regarding renewals, cancellations, and pick-ups. This week we have a renewal, a cancellation, some interesting series coming our way and, of course, a host of trailers.

Renewed

The BBC and HBO have renewed period drama Gentleman Jack for a second series. Sally Wainwright’s (Happy Valley) biographical series set in 19th century Britain, based on Anne Lister’s (Suranne Jones) diaries, who often is called the first modern lesbian, is currently airing Series 1 on HBO and BBC One in the UK.

Cancelled

About a year after the last season started we have now heard that Channel 4/AMC’s android sci-fi series Humans has been cancelled after three seasons and 24 episodes. The series was an adaption of the Swedish series Äkta människor or Real Humans. Season 3 ended on a cliffhanger.

Other developments

Talking to Collider, director McG (Rim of the World) has said that the TV adaption of James Cameron directed 1994 action spy movie True Lies has moved development from the Fox broadcast network to upcoming streaming service Disney+. This makes sense, as Disney now owns 20th Century Fox TV, who would produce the TV series. Meanwhile, we are still waiting on true HD releases of True Lies (and The Abyss) on home media from James Cameron.

Announced what feels now years ago was the The Dark Crystal prequel TV series for Netflix The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. The Jim Henson Company produced series has been steadily moved forward since, though. Now a number of photos have been released via Empire Magazine Summer 2019 edition. Hopefully this means the series will be with us soon.

Upcoming Disney+ Original Series and Avengers: Endgame six-part sequel series Marvel’s Falcon & Winter Soldier has found a director in Kari Skogland (The Handmaid’s Tale, Marvel’s The Punisher), according to Deadline. They also know that the series would see the return of Captain America: Civil War’s Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter/Agent 13 and Daniel Brühl as Helmut Zemo.

Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) is planning on adapting Ben Macintyre’s 2017 novel Rogue Heroes. Knight is working with Endemol Shine UK’s Kudos to bring the story of how the British military’s Special Air Service or SAS came to be during World War II. Currently there is no release date or even broadcaster known.

Trailers

NBC has released a trailer for new supernatural drama series The InBetween. Season 1 starts on Sunday, May 26.

Netflix has released trailers for each of the three new episodes of Black Mirror. Season 5 will be released on Wednesday, June 5.

American cable channel TNT has released a trailer for the third season of comedic drama Claws Season 3, which premieres on Sunday, June 9.

 

Netflix has released a trailer for supernatural Arabic Original Series Jinn, which premieres on Tuesday, June 13.

 

Oprah Winfrey’s channel OWN has released a new trailer for Season 4 of their drama series Queen Sugar. The series comes from Ava DuVernay (A Wrinkle in Time) and is based upon Natalie Baszile’s 2014 novel of the same name. Season 4 starts on Wednesday, June 14.

 

Netflix has also released another teaser for Stranger Things 3, which will be with us on Thursday, July 4.

 

On Friday, July 26 Netflix will release the seventh and final season of female prison drama series Orange in the New Black. This week they released a trailer for it.

 

Furthermore, Netflix release a trailer for their anime Original Series 7SEEDS. The sci-fi series will premiere on Friday, June 28.

 

We are going to cheat a bit here, but a trailer for the Downton Abbey movie has been released! It will be in theatres on Friday, September 20.

 

CBS All Access sci-fi series Star Trek: Picard, the first series to pick up after the movie Star Trek: Nemesis, has received its first teaser trailer. Internationally the series will air on Space in Canada and will stream on Amazon Prime Video, later this year. The series finale of Game of Thrones was the opportune moment for HBO to release a first trailer of the third season of sci-fi series Westworld. The series based on Michael Crichton’s 1973 movie of the same name will return somewhere in 2020.
