Halloween Countdown 2018 – Day 14 Fright Night (1985)

Greetings my Movie Ghouls!

Tonight’s feast of festering films is the 1985 version of Fright Night. We watch as we realise that when younger we probably had more time for movies like this. Have we been spoiled?

Fright Night

If you haven’t seen this, then it’s about a young (movie) teen who witnesses a vampire move in next door. The premise is great, it’s along the lines of The Burbs, where someone sees something they shouldn’t.

What gets me about this film is it is extremely dated. It is the 80’s through and through. There’s nothing wrong with that, but during the club scene, you know you’re in the 80’s.

Being a horror comedy means you can play fast and loose with things, but it does stick to the lore of vampires. It gives the heroes a set of rules to fight by, something that is sorely missed in this generation of vampire films.

They can’t cross a threshold, garlic, crosses, sunlight, if only they had a vampires penchant for untying knots it would be perfect.

But it is not perfect, it’s fun, and the effects are good, for the time. But after the remake, I feel that is the superior movie. I know, we wouldn’t have the remake without the original, but that’s just how I feel.

Roddy McDowell is great in this film, but again, I think the David Tennant version outplays this.

To be fair, they both work in the times they’re made. The 85 version is a throwback to the Hammer Horror movies and the remake just updated it.
