The Book Dragon Club (Book Review) – A great way to get your kids into reading.

Full disclosure – I am a fan of Lexi Reese. Her Relic Hunter series is great fun. We have interviewed her and Chris Devon (who narrates the audiobooks) for our podcast Creative Voices. I have reviewed all of her books to date and given each of them an enthusiastic thumbs up. The Book Dragon Club is no different.

A quick perusing through the book and I was hooked. As a former teacher I can say, without hesitation, I would have used this book with my students. It is full of activities that can be easily inserted into unit or lesson plans. As a parent I can say I WILL be using this book. With COVID-19 I’ve been looking for ways to help keep my kids’ education afloat. Simultaneously I’ve been trying to stay connected with my nieces and nephews who I can’t visit.

At this point, I must sound like the lamest uncle in the world. “Yes, I know what kids today like – Book Clubs. Book Clubs and hard butterscotch candies ” As if COVID turned today’s youth into the Golden Girls, minus the sass. But, that is the genius of the book. It is designed to make a book club more engaging and interesting for kids.

Every step in reading a book, from the selection to reading to analysis, is covered in a series of games and activities. As a parent of multiple kids, I really love this aspect. It allows me to use different things to motivate my kids who each have different needs and abilities.

For instance, my eldest son has a hard time picking a book despite his love of reading. Whereas my youngest can pick a book, it just never really varies in style or content. So, by using this book I am able to encourage a range of reading habits in my kids in a way that is actually engaging. There are lists and games directly related to just choosing a book.

If you are looking for a way to get or keep your kids engaged in reading this is a great place to start.
