Halloween Countdown 2018 – Day 21 A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge (1985)

Greeting my Movie Ghouls!

Finally, the ‘dvd’ player started to work, and we were able to watch A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge. That title!

As we watched A Nightmare on Elm Street last year, it was inevitable that we would watch the sequel this year. Again, it turns out I have never seen this, and I have started to wonder if I have seen any of the Freddy series. The scene around the swimming pool seemed familiar, and I think I remember seeing clips of the film on a movie chart show or something when I was a kid. But see the whole film, not ‘til tonight!

A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge

The story here is completely different, or at least tries to add another layer to what has come before. Instead of killing movie ‘teens’ in their sleep, Freddy Krueger is using his power to try and take over a 27 year old high school kid. Seriously Mark Patton who played Jesse was 27 in 1985!

If you watch the review, you’ll see that this is a film that I and Mrs Movie Geek differ on. I really enjoyed the different take on the film. Yes a lot of it is schlocky, a little bit cheesy, but there is a lot in this film that is extremely well made. The animatronics in both the transformation scene and the burning scene are both really well made.

As for the transformation scene, it’s pretty horrific, even by today’s standards. Freddy forces his way out of Jesse, physically cutting through him to make his way out into the real world. Then he kills someone and it’s just Jesse standing there covered in blood. We know it’s happening, as we know about Freddy, but it could have been interesting seeing it from the outsider’s point of view. Is Jesse just crazy!

Overall, I enjoyed this film. Yes, on first watching I was extremely tired and started to nod off, but then I watched it again and enjoyed it. The story was good, and different, making more of an effort to give the audience something new. The effects were great and gruesome making this a Halloween mainstay.
