Halloween Countdown 2018 – Day 9 Damien Omen II
Greetings my Movie Ghouls!
Do you ever look at your kid and think; you have the devil in you! I do, and I have three of them. Tonight’s film was Damien: Omen II. The sequel to the brilliant 1976 film The Omen.
Damien: Omen II
It follows on directly from the end of the first film. It reintroduces us to Carl Burgenhagen, the archaeologist who gave Robert Thorne the knives to kill Damien in the Omen. He has a newspaper with Damien’s picture in stating that he has survived. He takes a colleague to an excavation that has the Whore of Babylon statue and a mural on Yigael’s wall. The Mural depicts the faces of the Anti-Christ, and one of them is Damien’s from the first film. There are other faces, which include the face of the actor playing Damien in this film.
As with all these films, the good guys seem to always be on the back foot, with disaster befalling them when they get slightly close. The two archaeologists are buried alive; you see why I got out of archaeology, I was one relic away from being dead! Buried along with them is a box that Burgenhagen wants to be passed on to the new guardians of Damien. But it isn’t rediscovered for seven long years.
As said in my review, I felt this was a step down from the quality of the first. I don’t know if it was due to the kid playing Damien, or the fact that it just seemed more of the same. I just know that I didn’t really enjoy it that much.
Deaths
There are some clever death scenes, such as the doctor in the lift, and the man under the ice. But, whereas you have Patrick Troughton’s predicted death or David Warner decapitation, the deaths in Omen II don’t seem to live up to it.
One aspect I enjoyed was the number of worshippers there are around him. They are everywhere, and even up to the end, you’re not sure who they are. But it makes me wonder, how do they know? Did they get a memo, or do they have their own Yigael’s wall? You have to go back to the first film and the moment Robert Thorne accepts the adopted baby.
In summary, I did enjoy this, but not as much as I thought I would. However, looking forward to watching Omen III: The Final Conflict in next year’s Halloween Countdown.
