Author Lexi Rees has written two wonderful fantasy novels aimed at middle aged children. Now she has turned her attention to helping budding authors. Specifically children. In her new book Creative Writing Skills, Rees breaks down the elements of fiction into fun easily digestible activities.

As a former elementary school teacher I can say I would have loved this book for teaching writing. The exercises are broken down into various aspects like character development, plot, setting, etc. One of the beautiful things about the book is that the worksheets can be taught as whole sections or individually. This means that the book can be used start to finish as an entire unit on creative writing, or you can just cherry pick the parts your children need to work on.

A lot of thought went into the exercises themselves. However, the designs are great too. A well designed worksheet can increase understanding and engagement. There is a lot of variety not just in content but in the format. There’s a plethora of activities contained in this book. The various formats keep the activities fun without sacrificing the educational value.

Let me be clear though, you don’t have to be a teacher to enjoy this book. Anyone interested in fostering a child’s writing ability would do well to pick up this book.

Our Verdict: Brilliant. I love this book. It is a smartly planned out and well constructed book for teaching writing to kiddos.

Recommended for: anyone with kids, or who works with kids, ages 7-11, with an interest in writing/storytelling.
