Analysing the teaser trailer of Spider-Man: Far From Home

Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios have just dropped the first teaser trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home. The sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming and the third Marvel Cinematic Universe movie we can expect in 2019 after Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame. There is a lot to talk about!

1. Aunt May is working at a shelter

The teaser trailer begins with a homeless support event at a Salvation Army centre where Spider-Man swings in. Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) working at a shelter is straight from the comics. Early in Dan Slott’s Amazing Spider-Man run Aunt May started working as a volunteer at the F.E.A.S.T. (Food, Emergency Aid, Shelter and Training) centre ran by philanthropist Martin Lee, whose alter ego is the villain Mister Negative. That does bring up the question, will there be at least a hint at Mister Negative? After all, there is room for his gang in New York City after the decimation of gangs in Iron Fist Season 2.

2. Happy Hogan returns

Tony Stark’s former bodyguard and currently Stark Industries’ Head of Security Harold “Happy” Hogan (Jon Favreau) returns! And with him comes apparently a new suiter to Aunt May. In the comics, Happy was in a relationship with Pepper Potts, but that is not the MCU. Happy also waves around a fat cheque from the Stark Relief Foundation. The organisation was set up to deal with providing help after Avengers operations, like the subduing of the brainwashed Hulk in South-Africa in Avengers: Age of Ultron. It now looks like the foundation also provides grants to organisations like the Salvation Army.

3. What is happening at Avengers Tower?

In The Avengers we are introduced to Stark Tower, a remodelling and extension of the MetLife building in Manhattan. Stark Tower was again remodelled after it sustained heavy damage during the Battle of New York. The results were first seen in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and then in full in Avengers: Age of Ultron. In Spider-Man: Homecoming it turned out that the Avengers Compound in upstate New York became the primary base and Tony Stark decided to sell Stark Tower, commonly called Avengers Tower, to an unknown entity. Since then we have heard nothing further about this, but this teaser trailer shows us new developments. Avengers Tower is again being remodelled. This time the whole Tower is getting a makeover. The new design makes the Tower a lot wider. The construction work was not yet seen in Avengers: Infinity War, but we only saw the Tower in the far background. And the big question remains: Who bought the building?

4. MCU Peter Parker’s birthday

A small detail. Peter Parker’s passport is in full view in the teaser trailer. No exact birthday is given, but we do see that MCU Peter Parker (Tom Holland) is born on the August 10. This is earlier in the year than in the comics. In those Peter Parker is a Libra, meaning he’s born between September 23 and October 22.

5. Europe doesn’t need a friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man

In the teaser trailer, Peter says “Europe doesn’t need a friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man.” We might be reading to much into it, but maybe the movie will hint at European Marvel superheroes. Prime candidates are: In the UK Brian Braddock/Captain Britain and MI-13. In France, Jeannine Sauvage/Guillotine and Alain Racine/Le Peregrine. In Italy, non-other than Leonardo da Vinci! Indeed, the famous artiste is still running around in the Marvel comics and is even a prominent member of S.H.I.E.L.D. originator The Brotherhood of the Shield.

6. Where is Cindy Moon?

It does not appear like Cindy Moon (Tiffany Espensen) will go along on the school trip to Europe. This while Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon), Betty Brand (Angourie Rice, who suspiciously looks like Gwen Stacy) and Flash Thompson (Tony Revolori) all go. Cindy also appeared for a second in Avengers: Infinity War, so it would be kind of weird if she would be omitted from Spider-Man: Far From Home, although not impossible. Nothing big could be going on, but in the 2014 Amazing Spider-Man comic and its event Spider-Verse Cindy Moon was introduced for the first time as a major character, taking the codename “Silk.” Bitten by the same spider as Peter Parker, on the same school trip, Cindy/Silk was designated as “The Bride” by the Spider-people hunting Inheritors, who were attracted to her. For that reason, she was hidden inside a bunker for years until Peter Parker broke her out and the events of Spider-Verse kicked off.

7. Nick Fury and Maria Hill

In Venice, Peter Parker is visited by former S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) who recruits him for a mission. It makes sense that Nick Fury is operating in Europe. He went there after the events of Captain America: Winter Soldier (with a short detour for the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and so far as we know he has remained there, except for that visit to Hawkeye’s family farm. The helicarrier Fury showed up with in Avengers: Age of Ultron is also stationed in Europe, going with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Fury since also has kept away from the North American activities of S.H.I.E.L.D., which happened under Director Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), Director Jeffrey Mace (Jason O’Mara), and current Director Alphonso Mackenzie (Henry Simmons). Next to Fury we most likely see the back of his righthand woman Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders). The former Deputy Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and currently the primary Avengers support personnel member clearly has teamed up again with Nick Fury.

8. When is Spider-Man: Far From Home set?

Previously it has been said that Spider-Man: Far From Home is set directly after the upcoming Avengers: Endgame. In the teaser trailer, we hear Peter Parker say, “Nick Fury just hijacked our Summer vacation.” This would indicate that the movie is at least set about nine months after Avengers: Infinity War. That movie is set during the Autumn, going with the fact that Peter Parker is going to school and trees are letting their leaves fall. Next to that, Ant-Man and the Wasp, which happens soon before and during Avengers: Infinity War, confirms that the events of those two movies happen in October or November. We can deduce that from the fact that there are humpback whales off the coast of San Francisco and trees are letting their leaves fall. But what if they lied to us, and the movie is actually in the Summer before Avengers: Infinity War? We will have to wait and see.

9. Who are the Elementals?

It is generally assumed that Spider-Man will be fighting the Elementals. A team of supervillains that have elemental powers and first appeared in Marvel comics’ Supernatural Thrillers #8 in 1974. In the comics, the Elementals are outcasts from another universe who ruled a kingdom on Earth millennia ago. A premise that is unlikely to carry over to the MCU. Their members are: Hellfire, the leader of the group who controls fire; Hydron, who controls water; Magnum, who controls the earth; and finally Zephyr, the only female in the group and actually an Asgardian recruited in the main Marvel universe. She controls the winds. This is at least assuming that they directly adapt the comics, which is not always the case in the MCU. It could be possible that the earth elemental is Spider-Man villain Sandman and the water elemental is actually another Spider-Man villain called Hydro-Man.

10. Is Mysterio a wizard?

Spider-Man villain Mysterio is in the comics an incredible special effects designer who eventually used his talents for crime. The MCU version of Quentin Beck/Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) however very much seems to be a wizard. At least, he flies around without any clear device to do so and it looks like he uses the same mandala-like spells Doctor Strange and others use. The movie Doctor Strange has shown there are quite some wizards out there, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 even showed us an alien one in Krugarr, so why not? And if those were special effects, why is he not in Hollywood becoming a millionaire? It is, however, possible Mysterio uses tech-based magic. In Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D a technical Sling Ring portal was created using the Darkhold grimoire.
