WGN’s Halloween 2021 Comic Recommendations
Halloween is the time of year to get spooky! And there are multiple ways to do so! Here we are going to give you a number of comics that make ideal reading for October’s lead up to Halloween.
DC vs. Vampires
Mary, Queen of Blood, vampire elder and leader of the Cult of the Blood Red Moon has been murdered. Only she was what held the balance between the vampire world and the mortal world, but now that she is dead both worlds will plunge in bloody war. Now only the Justice League has a chance to stop the carnage. Written by James Tynion IV (Nice House on the Lake) and Matthew Rosenberg (The Joker Presents: A Puzzlebox), with art by Otto Schmidt (Hawkeye: Freefall).
Batman: Fear State
Batman: Fear State is the currently running Batman crossover event at DC. Written by James Tynion IV (Constantine: The Hellblazer) it is his second and final story arc for the Batman comic series. In the past Jonathan Crane aka Scarecrow has developed the Fear State Theory, which states that through tremendous fear society can evolve to something better. Now, with the Magistrate Program getting full permission to perform police activities and a series of bombings, Gotham City is extremely nervous. This seems the opportune moment to test Crane’s Fear State Theory.
Task Force Z
You know Task Force X aka the Suicide Squad, but now DC brings us Task Force Z, dead villains fighting for a new chance at life. After an attack on Arkham Asylum were numerous villains were killed, Bane, Man-Bat, the Arkham Knight, Sundowner and Mr. Bloom are reawakened to become Task Force Z. There is but one man to lead this team, one who knows what it’s like to die and come back: the Red Hood. But will he lead or stop Task Force Z in the end? The 12-issue series by writer Matthew Rosenberg (Something is Killing the Children) and artist Eddy Borrows (Blackest Night: Superman) has just started.
Absolute Carnage
Part of Donny Cates’ run of the Venom comic book series, Marvel’s Absolute Carnage crossover event is maybe the most gory Carnage story to date. Cletus Kasady has seen the darkness that is Knull and the host of the Carnage symbiote now knows one thing: God is coming. To form a strong enough connection and awaken the god of all symbiotes Carnage will need to collect Codexs, the imprint a symbiote leaves on a host. The way to do this is right up Carnage’s alley: ripping out and consuming the former host’s spine. And there will be a lot of spines to rip out in the Marvel universe. Venom host Eddie Brock, Spider-Man and everyone who ever was a host has to band together to stop Carnage and so stop an even bigger threat: the coming of the King in Black Knull.
The Darkhold
A Marvel comic crossover miniseries written by Steve Orlando (Commanders in Crisis) and with art by Cian Tormey (Injustice: Year Zero). Wanda Maximoff the Scarlet Witch wakes up in a cold sweat after having a prophetic nightmare. The dark grimoire called the Darkhold has been unearthed by Doctor Doom, but the Elder God Chthon wants his creation back. One way or another, if the Darkhold isn’t captured by the heroes Iron Man, The Wasp, Black Bolt, Blade, Scarlet Witch and Spider-Man unspeakable horror will follow. The currently running series is comprised by the following issues: The Darkhold Alpha, The Darkhold: Iron Man #1, The Darkhold: Blade #1, The Darkhold: Wasp #1, The Darkhold: Black Bol #1, The Darkhold: Spider-Man #1, and The Darkhold Omega.
Star Wars Adventures: Tales from Vader’s Castle
The first in a series of Star Wars Adventures comics from IDW telling scary stories in the shadow of Darth Vader’s Castle on the planet Mustafar. Tales from Vader’s Castle has a group of crash-landed Rebels tell spooky stories about many Star Wars characters. Star Wars: Rebels’ Kanan, Hera and Chopper are being haunted by a Phantom Passenger onboard the Ghost. During the Clone Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi and Count Dooku encounter a vampire infestation. A post-Solo: A Star Wars Story Han Solo and Chewbacca have to deliver an artefact to a creepy planet. Ewoks have to survive being hunted by a Gorax. And finally, it all comes together with Darth Vader himself.
Tales from Vader’s Castle has gotten multiple follow ups: Return to Vader’s Castle, Shadow of Vader’s Castle, and Ghosts from Vader’s Castle.
