Preview US broadcasting season 2018-2019: NBC

It’s September, which means that in the US the new TV broadcasting season is about to kick off. The nights are getting darker and broadcasters will make sure they have something to entertain you. Here’s a list of all returning and new series coming your way (eventually, if you aren’t in the US) from NBC. For the sake of streamlining this already long list we will not include reality programming, only scripted drama.

RENEWED

Returning this season to NBC are these series…

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: The longest running spinoff of Law & Order hits the same amount of seasons the parent series achieved with Season 20. This season again follows the Manhattan Special Victims Unit detectives who investigate sexual crimes and crimes against women, children and the elderly. Season 20 starts Thursday 27 September.

Will & Grace: Last season the comedy got a revived and returned with a well watched Season 9. The New York City set comedy following gay lawyer Will Truman and straight interior designer Grace Adler therefore obviously returns for a tenth season. But that is not all, because Season 11 is also already ordered. Season 10 premieres Thursday 4 October.

The Blacklist: The crime thriller series starring James Spader (Stargate, Avengers: Age of Ultron) as  “Concierge of Crime” Raymond “Red” Reddington returns for Season 6. However, we will need to wait some time for it, as the series returns mid-season.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Cancelled by Fox, but saved by NBC (who also own the series)! Season 6 returns on NBC. Originally with 13 episodes, but recently this was extended to 18 episodes! We will also need to wait a bit for this one too, as the comedy returns mid-season.

Chicago Fire: The first of Dick Wolf’s Chicago set series in the same universe as Law & Order. The firefighters and paramedics working at Firehouse 51 of the Chicago Fire Department return for Season 7 Wednesday 26 September.

Chicago P.D.: Dick Wolf’s second Chicago series returns for a sixth season. The uniformed patrol officers and the Intelligence Unit of the 21st District of the Chicago Police Department return to our screens Wednesday 26 September.

Chicago Med: Also returning is Dick Wolf’s third Chicago series, which follows the emergency department doctors and nurses of the Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. Season 4 also starts Wednesday 26 September, making that a Chicago night on NBC.

Superstore: The comedy following the employees of “big-box store” Cloud 9 led by America Ferrera (the voice of How to Train Your Dragon’s Astrid) returns for Season 4 Thursday 4 October.

The Good Place: The Ted Danson (Cheers, CSI) and Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars, Frozen) heavenly serialised comedy returns for Season 3 on Thursday 27 September.

This is Us: NBC’s ratings and critical hit ensemble drama following the lives and families of two parents, and their three children born on the same day as their father’s birthday, returns. Season 3 starts Tuesday 25 September.

Timeless: This time travel series just won’t die, having defied cancellation two times. The end is nigh, though, as the series will not return with a Season 3. What we do get is a two hour wrap-up movie. The airdate of that movie is not yet set.

A.P. Bio: The comedy following disgraced Harvard philosophy scholar turned high-school Advanced Placement Biology teacher Glenn Howerton (Serenity, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) returns for Season 2. You will again have to be patient, as this one is also planned for mid-season.

Good Girls: This crime comedy starring Christina Hendricks (Firefly, Mad Men) returns for a second season following the Detroit mothers/robbers. This one also is held back for mid-season.

Midnight, Texas: This supernatural Summer series did well enough last year to get promoted to the regular season. The series based on the novel trilogy by Charlaine Harris (True Blood) and following the supernatural inhabitants of the Texas town of Midnight returns for Season 2 on Friday 26 October. Just in time for Halloween.

Trial & Error: The documentary and reality legal show spoof which is also an anthology series in that each season is another case, returned for a second season past Summer. Nicholas D’Agosto (Final Destination 5, Gotham) returns as young bright-eyed lawyer Josh Segal who handles cases from behind a taxidermy shop. This season, subtitled “Lady, Killer,” centres on the case of eccentric heiress Kristin Chenoweth (Rio 2, Pushing Daisies) who was caught with her dead husband in the trunk of her car. No word yet on a Season 3.

PICKED UP

NBC has chosen the following series to be added to their programming line-up…

I Feel Bad: Based on a novel by Orli Auslander this comedy follows a woman who needs to come to terms with not having it all and not being the perfect wife/mother/professional. Amy Poehler is attached as executive producer. Starts Wednesday 19 September.

Manifest: Mystery series starring Josh Dallas (Thor, Once Upon A Time) among others as one of the passengers of  Montego Air Flight 828. After a bit of a bumpy flight the passenger airliner lands safely. However, five years has passed since they took off. The series starts Monday 24 September. Next to the trailer you can already see the first part of the premiere episode!

New Amsterdam: Not a revival of the Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones) starring immortal detective series on Fox. No, this is a medical drama starring Ryan Eggold (The Blacklist) as the new medical director cutting back bureaucracy and enhancing patient care. Inspired by the oldest hospital in America, the Bellevue. This series starts Tuesday 25 September.

Abbey’s: Comedy from the producers of The Good Place and Parks and Recreation. Basically Cheers but it’s a clandestine backyard drinking hole in San Diego with a strict door policy. This bar will be open mid-season.

The Enemy Within: Former CIA Agent Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter, Batman: Gotham by Gaslight) and convicted traitor is taken out of a high security prison to help the FBI catch a criminal familiar to her. This series will premiere mid-season.

The Gilded Age: Costume drama from Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes, set in the “Gilded Age” of great economic growth in the US in the 1880s. This series was already ordered in 2012, but is now finally coming to TV with a 10 episode first season! Probably premieres mid-season.

The InBetween: Harriet Dyer plays a medium who communicates with the dead and helps police detective Paul Blackthorne (Arrow, EA’s Star Wars: Battlefront II) to solve crimes. If this sounds familiar then it may not come as a surprise that this series is coming from Medium producer Moira Kirland. This is another one for mid-season.

The Village: Mosaic drama about people from all walks of life living in the same apartment building in Brooklyn, New York City. And yes, this one is also for mid-season.
