Ant-Man’s Time Travel and Mutant Theories

Hello my Movie Geeks!

Yes, I’m going to say that at the beginning of all my articles. I am fresh from my first viewing of Ant-Man & The Wasp.

After recording the MAaD Movie Pod (The Official Podcast of WorldGeeklyNews.com) I realised I missed off yet another thought about what this movie means for the future of the MCU.

Spoilers for Ant-Man & The Wasp

Michelle Pfeiffer’s Character Janet Van Dyne says she needed to ‘adapt’ and ‘evolve’ and it got me thinking about Mutants. (But, you can listen to that Here.) I completely missed the line also spoken by Pfeiffer that Scott should:

‘Avoid slipping into the Time Vortex’

This then brings in another version of time travel other than Doctor Strange’s Time Stone.

Avengers 4

Ant-Man & The Wasp had the perfect standalone story, separating itself from the wider MCU in both story and location. It is predominantly set in and around San Fransisco, which is far from the usual New York backdrop we’re used to. The story also keeps self contained, being of small scale (pun intended?) Rather than the world ending scenario that we got in Infinity War.

But I’m not going to go into the story, I am the last person on the planet who has just caught up with the MCU. If you want a review of the film you can read that Here. I want to discuss the idea that Scott Lang is the one who will kick off Avengers 4.

Confusingly, Ant-Man & The Wasp came out after Infinity War being mostly set before that film. But after seeing this, I understand why. As Thor Ragnarok was the final film before Infinity War in terms of story, Ant-Man & The Wasp is the final film before Avengers 4 in terms of story.

Spoilers!

At the end of Ant-Man & The Wasp, Scott Lang went into the Quantum Realm to collect some Quantum Energy for the continued treatment of Ghost. Unfortunately for Scott, at the same time he goes into the Quantum Realm Thor just threw Stormbreaker into Thanos’ chest (not his head).

Janet, Hope and Hank are immediately turned to dust and Scott is left screaming inside the Quantum Realm.

From set photos and early speculation we already know that at least some scenes will take place during the Battle of New York in The Avengers. We can see Stark, Cap and Scott all wearing the same fancy watch.

Theories

Scott is going to be left in the Quantum Realm potentially ‘adapting’ and ‘evolving’ to understand the Quantum Realm and also perhaps the Time Vortex.

He will escape in the future, which will account for Robert Downey Jr being aged up for Avengers 4. Also the casting of Emma Fuhrmann as Cassie Lang, Scott’s 11 year old daughter in Antman & The Wasp. Fuhrmann is 17, which suggests Scott will be stuck in the Quantum Realm for at least 6 years.

But it’s not just me who thinks this. Whilst chatting to Huffington Post Ant-Man Director Peyton Reed had this to say when asked if Ant-Man could show up in previous Avengers movies via time travel:

“Based on the science that we’ve set up in the first movie and this one, I won’t rule out the possibility,” Reed said, “because, again, we are dealing with a time vortex. That could happen.”

Unless this was a slip up, or an intended red herring, this theory may well be true.

Scott will have to find Stark and using a mix of Pym-tech and Stark-tech we’re going to get some leaping through time, putting right what once went wrong.

I hope Scott says “Oh Boy!”

But, that’s not all

Janet Van Dyne mentioned that she had to ‘adapt’ and ‘evolve’ when talking about the new powers she possesses. During the film we see that she has some kind of Quantum based healing powers. These powers have occurred because of her time spent trapped in the Quantum Realm.

The fact that she claims to be:

“Not the same woman I was 30 years ago”

This suggests that she has physically changed, you could say mutated on a Quantum level.

We already know that Disney have successfully acquired Fox. Meaning the X-Men and the Fantastic Four are now part of the same company who own Marvel. It’s just a matter of time before they are integrated into the MCU.

But what if this throw away line, to account for the strange powers Janet now has is more than just a throw away line?

As discussed above the Quantum Realm will feature heavily in Avengers 4. But this line is anyway of opening the door to bringing in a whole new layer to the Marvel Universe, the X-Men.

Janet Van Dyne has been trapped in the Quantum Realm and has been forced to mutate. She is the first Mutant in the MCU.

Once Avengers 4 ends we will be a few heroes short, and the X-Men, whoever they may be, will have to take up the slack.
